Where People Go To Shape The Future of Sport

Defining the future of sports is a big, lofty goal. To do it, we, at the Sports Innovation Lab, have to do more than just create technology and research that empowers global leaders. We need to assemble the best and brightest minds from around the world. That's why, this February, the Sports Innovation Lab is opening its first “Sports Innovation Lab powered by WeWork” in Boston.

Help define the future of sport by joining us for our open house on December 13th and meet our CEO Angela Ruggiero.

The new Lab will be the headquarters for the Sports Innovation Lab. The partnership we've designed with WeWork gives the Sports Innovation Lab the opportunity to bring in other emerging and established sports technology brands to work together, side-by-side, on the trends we believe will shape the future of sport: Quantified Athlete, Smart Venue, Immersive Media, Esports, and Next Generation Sponsorship and Engagement.

It's hard for people who have never stepped into a WeWork co-working office to picture the Sports Innovation Lab we've designed. WeWork offices are known for their beautiful design, their ability to provide shared space, and services that optimize community and collaboration, while also enabling privacy.

Our first Sports Innovation Lab at 200 Portland Street (the first of many globally) sits across the street from one of the most iconic sports arenas in the world, The TD Garden. Coupled with a sophisticated technology community and the largest concentration of Universities in the world, Boston is the ideal place for us to create the first hub for global sports innovation. We have spent the past few months designing what the space can achieve and how it can accelerate the way companies in our industry innovate.

What to Expect

Here are some goals for our physical Sports Innovation Labs:

  1. Bring together emerging and established companies. Both are necessary to accelerate innovation.
  2. Make sure the voice of leagues, teams, and federations are represented so novel concepts are grounded in the realities of current and future business models.
  3. Share best practices and learnings from our academic partners and leading testing facilities from around the world.
  4. Amplify the athlete's voice. Bring in professional athletes to work with our partners.
  5. Build a technology and information-powered community. Unlike other co-working spaces, this community will be tied together by SIL's research platform. Every member will have access to our research and data to stimulate conversation and challenge thinking.
  6. Provide on-going access to the Sports Innovation Lab’s deep network of advisors, University partners (including the immense student population in Boston), athletes, investors, and thought leaders.

Because the world is full of sports technology accelerators and incubators, it is important to clarify what this Lab is NOT:

We are not an "accelerator”

We are motivated to help the industry collaborate, partner, and launch new initiatives. We charge a fee for that service. We do NOT take equity or invest in the members in our space. We are focused on established companies as well as emerging companies. For example, some of our current partners such as Intel, Verizon, Octagon, The NBA, The NFLPA, Coca Cola, Gatorade, IBM, and our emerging technology clients are all potential members of the Lab at Portland St. We hope to give them access to one another to accelerate innovation in sport.

The Sports Innovation Lab invites you to join us at 200 Portland Street this February. Membership includes access to private events, office hours with SIL analysts and advisor, privileged access to our extensive sports and technology networks, and facilitated business development. Space is limited and we're looking for the best and brightest! Please join us if you're ready to change the future of sport.
